If you are planning a trip to the Everglades, you will want to consider staying in Everglade City at the Ivey House B&B. This is a piece of Everglade history that goes back to the mid 1920’s. Although it was moved in 1926 after a hurricane it is still a building of tremendous historical significance to the development of Everglade City.
In early 1920 the wood-frame building was constructed at Port DuPont to be used as a recreational center for construction workers of the famous Tamiami Trail. It had a pool hall and bowling alley. One of the crew chiefs who worked for Barron Collier was Earl Ivey. Following the completion of the trail the building was converted to a boarding house, it was run as a boarding house by he and his wife until 1960 when he purchased the property.
Ivey died two years later and his wife continued operating the house until she passed in 1974. The building was then acquired by a private school and turned into a classroom, and a dormitory for problem children. In 1989 a David Harraden purchased the home and converted it into a bed and breakfast to accommodate his other business, American Canoe Tours, Inc.
In addition to clean rooms, gift shop, grill and swimming pools you can also book adventure kayaking tours right from the hotel. It is also close to many other historical buildings.
